In the past decade, urban and migration studies have analyzed the relevance of the local context for establishing social networks. A particular focus of research was socially and ethnically mixed neighborhoods. The class thus addresses networks in mixed neighborhoods, asking whether and under what circumstances mixed neighborhoods translate into mixed networks and what the benefit of mixed networks might be (or not). We will discuss, for example, the role of institutions such as kindergartens or schools, public places such as playgrounds or cafes, or the role of individuals (brokers) for the creation of networks. We also look at different meanings and conceptions of strong/weak/absent ties, and critically discuss often used concepts in research, such as ‘integration’. |
