In this class we will study several different varieties of English, starting with the English that is spoken at the British Isles, in America and Australia (/ New Zealand), which we can again divide in many dialects or varieties, as well. Also, varieties spoken in Africa, South-East Asia and English as a lingua franca will be discussed. Every week we will look at lexical, syntactical, phonological, morphological and pragmatical aspects of one different variety and compare them with the English variant we speak. For the students planning to become English teachers the question might be relevant, what variety they would like or are able to teach. The course will be taught synchronously. |
