This course will be dedicated to the first decades of the 20th century, which not only witnessed unprecedented historical upheavals and fundamental changes in the political, social and cultural fields but also brought forth a new aesthetic movement affecting the various arts (e.g. literature, painting, music, dance). We will investigate the major literary innovations of the period against the horizon of new scientific developments as well as significant shifts in concepts of self and reality, gender and class relations, life scripts and employment patterns, often seen as a result of a programmatic rejection of Victorian values. We will include both acknowledged representatives as well as less famous figures of literary Modernism and base our analyses on a variety of sources, mainly prose fiction, poetry and essays.
