This seminar is mainly focused on theories and methods on how to write a transnational visual (art) history of eastern Europe during the Cold War that has the potential to challenge and expand the reality of an ideologically divided world order. The course defines eastern Europe as an intellectually and creatively interlinked terrain and not as an entirely isolated geopolitical entity separated from the rest of the world through the Iron Curtain. Focusing on closed readings, in-depth discussions and a variety of case studies, the seminar will not only debate modern and contemporary art as a genuinely border-crossing phenomenon, but it will also nuance the state-artist relationship within state socialisms. Approaches will include, but are not limited to decentering modernism, glocal art histories, world art history and world art studies as well as minor transnationalism.
