In recent years, historical research has increasingly focused on exploring cultural transfer between different cultural areas. In particular, global history aims to investigate exchange relationships, and to examine possible mediation strategies but also misunderstandings. One methodical way of meeting these demands is to focus on individual historical actors who stand at the interface: Travellers, adventurers, merchants, and missionaries: cultural mediators, who acted as interpreters and translators or conducted scientific and intellectual mediation in other ways. This course is intended to teach critical reading by discussing particularly interesting contributions from this lively field of research. |
