These last two course days are for Humboldt students who wish to attend a full Hauptseminar. They will be eight hours each, the exact beginning and end of each course day will be announced in class.
This is a joint Humboldt-Princeton seminar run by Thomas Schmidt (Humboldt) and Michael Smith (Princeton), focusing on Pamela Hieronymi's commentary on P. F. Strawson's seminal paper "Freedom and Resentment" in her recently published Freedom, Resentment, and the Metaphysics of Morals (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2020). We will begin by reading and discussing Strawson's paper, and then we will read and discuss a chapter of Hieronymi's book each week. Hieronymi will join the final joint meeting for a Q&A.
The seminar is open to graduate students from Princeton and to doctoral, Master and, in exceptional cases, Bachelor students ('Philosophie' or 'Philosophie/Ethik') from Humboldt. For Humboldt students, the course will count as a 'Hauptseminar' provided that they attend, in addition to the joint sessions, two full course days (with 8 hours each). Space in the joint part of the seminar is limited to maximally eight students from each institution. Interested students should apply by explaining their suitability to join the seminar in an email sent to both Schmidt and Smith by 30 September 2020 (one paragraph maximum) (email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org). Successful applicants will be notified by 9 October 2020.
Meetings 1-6 will be on Mondays (30 Nov, 14 Dec, 4 Jan, 11 Jan, 18 Jan, 25 Jan) at 10:15 am - 11:45 am EST / 16:15 - 17:45 CET. Meeting 7 will be on Tuesday, 2 Feb, at 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm EST / 19:15 -20:45 CET. The two additional course days for Humboldt students who wish to attend a full Hauptseminar will be on 20 & 21 February 2021 (Saturday & Sunday).
Application by e mail required.
Please note the irregular schedule as well as the remarks on the limited number of participants from each institution and on the application process included in the course discription (Kommentar). The field "Max. Teilnehmer" reflects the number of Humboldt students who can participate.
