This seminar offers an introduction to the theory and practice of designing and carrying out research on contemporary China. Seminar content covers the core elements of the research process (e.g. moving from broad to focused topics; working with sources and structuring literature reviews; developing research questions; methodological choices; effective writing). There is a particular focus on case study methods since they are used so often in area studies research. The particular challenges of conducting social research on and in authoritarian China will also be discussed. Working closely with the instructor, students will design and carry out a case study-based research project on some aspect of contemporary Chinese society, economy or politics. The language of instruction is English. |
