This course aims at providing the participants with a forum for the exploration and analysis of the texts of one of the most widely discussed and commented-on authors of the 19th century: Edgar Allan Poe. Like hardly another author of his time, Poe has exerted a vital effect on the formation of various literary genres, most notably detective and science fiction, while his name has also come to be understood as quasi-synonymous with US Gothic fiction. Exploring all of these avenues, participants will read Poe’s poetry, short fiction, and essays on literary criticism, as well as investigate his influence on subsequent authors and artists, thus gaining a better understanding of Poe’s position in and impact on US literature and the literary market place. The course will be taught in a Moodle-based, asynchronous manner. E-mails containing the link to the Moodle-course and further relevant information will be dispatched at the end of the registration period. Information regarding specific course requirements will be provided in the first week of the semester. |
