In the Earth Observation module, you will acquire advanced knowledge on remote sensing methods with a focus on the optical domain. Basic concepts of remote sensing and image interpretation, as well as programming experience in R (e.g. through the module Quantitative Methods for Geographers) are prerequisites for participating in this module.
The research questions targeted here are jointly developed in the accompanying seminar. You will get exposed to ongoing research projects and learn to embed remote sensing approaches in applied scientific analyses. Case studies in the seminar focus on two main research areas in geography: forests and agricultural landscapes. The different regional foci will align with the research projects conducted in the Earth Observation Lab and could include, for example, Eastern Europe, or Latin America.
Earth Observation will be an online course during the winter term 2020/2021. The overall seminar workload is 120 hours, with 25 hours presence time including a student presentation. The computer seminar has an overall workload of 120 hours, with 25 hours presence time. Off-seminar workload averages 4 hours per week for the computer seminar exercises. This module will finish with an online exam with a focus on technical/methodological and application related aspects within the broader framing of global change and optical remote sensing. |
