South Asian North American literature represents a mosaic of many different voices, perspectives, and concerns, depending on the specific North American context (USA vs. Canada, urban vs. rural, etc.), as well as the author's particular South Asian background (Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Pakistani…). There is one thing South Asian North American texts have in common, though: They write what Inderpal Grewal has called a "transnational America," linking the US and Canada not only to South Asian countries, but also to other parts of the South Asian diaspora. In doing so, texts by authors such as Bharati Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri, Shani Mootoo, V.V. Ganeshananthan, and Mira Jacob (re) configure gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and other social categories, addressing topics as diverse as Orientalism, arranged marriages, the Sri Lankan civil war, or the 2016 US presidential elections.
