In the early 20th century a debate between theology and the history of religions emerged among scholars and theorists of early Christianity. Today, many of their questions are still with us, not only in Germany but in different forms in British and American faculties of theology and religious studies. This seminar will evaluate the debates between theological and religious-historical approaches in comparative perspective: participants will read literature from early 20th century Germany as well as the contemporary methodological debates in Germany, England, and the United States, and will have the opportunity to engage invited international scholars throughout the course of the seminar. Auditors most welcome. |
