Aristotle's *Posterior Analytics* is central to understanding not only Aristotle, but also to an epistemological tradition spanning two milennia: it has, for instance, inspired a recent turn towards understanding in epistemology. This course will serve both as an accelerated introduction to Aristotle and that tradition, suitable for
beginning students with some background in Ancient Philosophy (but not necessarily Aristotle). But we will also read and discuss David Bronstein's 2016 book on the Posterior Analytics, *Aristotle on Knowledge and Learning*, alongside a close reading of the primary text, so that the course will also be of interest for more advanced students.
Knowledge of Ancient Greek will be helpful, but is not required. The seminar discussion will be primarily in English, though students who feel more comfortable contributing in German are more than welcome to do so.
Students should (re-)read Plato's *Meno* (preferably in Sedley and Long's translation, available at https://bit.ly/2xQo1B7) before the first meeting of the seminar. |
