Seminar:
Jane Austen’s novels continue to engage readers with their marriage plots and stories of female education. While this seminar will certainly not ignore these traditional subjects, we shall also study her fiction in terms of narratology and with regard to its cultural and socioeconomic contexts as well as imperial subtexts. Jane Austen on screen will also be considered.

Vertiefungs-/Lektüreseminar:
Not only do the early novels of Jane Austen engage intertextually with sentimental and gothic fictions of the late eighteenth century, but Jane Austen as a writer is heavily indebted to eighteenth-century novelists, notably Tobias Smollett and Frances Burney. This seminar is designed to study such important eighteenth-century pretexts in detail, above all Frances Burney’s novels.
