In this seminar we will study the process, technique and aims of rewriting canonised literature through a single source-text, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Published in 1847, the novel had a profound impact not only on subsequent nineteenth-century fiction, but also on twentieth and twenty-first century literary representations of women’s experiences. Beginning with a close reading of Brontë’s novel, we will move on to exploring various literary rewritings of this narrative. We will consider both how Brontë’s themes are carried out and transformed through these various texts and why her narrative has been such a rich source of reinterpretation.
In preparation for the seminar, please acquire and read the following novels:
- Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre
- Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca
- Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea
