Students will learn about identity narratives of individuals who straddle and intermix multiple "races" and cultures. Using a comparative interdisciplinary model with a foundation in cultural and literary studies, as well as critical mixed race studies, students will read Chicana literature, specifically Mestiza literature of the borderlands. Readings and assignments will be a combination of prose, poetry, memoir and personal essays, layered with critical race theory, border studies, and other foundational Chicana texts. We will also spend time with film. In addition, the interdisciplinary writing practice in this seminar will develop versatile skills for academic, reflective, and public presentation (assignments, seminar structure and approach will mirror theme and content of seminar). |
