“Embodiment” – the theory that the body considerably affects cognitive processes – is a hot topic in linguistics. In this seminar, we will focus on the emerging area of embodied speech production. Following a critical overview of different views of embodiment, we will discuss recent empirical studies that explore ways in which the human body interacts with speech production. Topics include manual gestures and body movements, breathing, and body rhythms. Our goals are to think through the implications of embodiment and to consider how the embodied approach might help us better understand speech production.
The seminar will be based on weekly readings and discussions. The lecture material will be in English, but students may make their contributions in German or English. |
