In this course, students will conduct own research on different phenomena related to the interaction between (social, linguistic, or visual) context and language processing. The course will guide students through all of the stages of basic linguistic experimental work: formulating a research question, creating materials, designing the experiment, programming it, collecting data, analyzing data and interpreting results. The course will demand a high degree of initiative from the students, who are expected to create, develop and run their own (reaction time, acceptability, or rating) experiment in groups under the guidance of the course instructors. The course is specifically aimed at training students interested in carrying out an experimental master’s thesis project, and, more broadly, all students interested in experimental linguistics. Language of instruction will be English but students are free to make their contributions in German or English.
