This course focuses on students who prepare for the third Northern Sotho examination. Grammatical knowledge is deepened in the first 2 contact hours through formal lectures. In these lectures we want to achieve some evidence of grammatical accuracy in subject-verb agreement, noun-adjective agreement, positive and negative forms, different past tense forms, reflexive verbs, possessive pronouns, nouns indicating place as well as the consecutive mood. Students start to read and to translate longer texts out, and into Northern Sotho. Students are expected to write letters and short essays comprising different themes. The other 2 contact hours are used to improve listening and communication skills. Dialogues, short narrations and mock situations are used to achieve the correct articulation and to improve basic communication skills. Active communication is practiced in groups as well as through individual presentations or role-play. A mother-tongue speaker is available for 2 additional hours per week to read and translate Northern Sotho texts with students and to explain cultural matters. The course is concluded with a written and oral examination. |
