The seminar examines scientific communication (communication among scientists, within the scientific system) and, in parallel, the communication of scientific knowledge beyond science. The focus of the seminar is on novel practices of knowledge production and new forms of knowledge transmission, and on questions of quality and authority that go with these. Relevant topics thus include the transmission of data and software within the context of efforts to make knowledge production more "open", "accessible" or "transparent"; the quantification of communication of science in the form of indicators and metrics; and the communication of uncertain, controversial or "fake" scientific results.
The main teaching language will be English. Alongside discussions and readings the course will include guest speakers and outings. Students will carry out projects in small groups which, through the analysis of scientific communication, will exemplify the diverse functions of science plays in or for society. |
