This seminar provides an introduction to and overview of the recent and vibrant research field on the international dimension of authoritarian rule. While most theories of authoritarian politics focus on domestic level processes, a growing literature is shifting focus towards the international aspects of authoritarianism. Here, two broad questions can be distinguished: What influence do international factors have on domestic authoritarian politics? And how do authoritarian regimes manoeuvre on the international stage? The seminar will deal with a range of central themes concerning – among other things – the evidence and effects of autocracy promotion; the international cooperation of autocratic regimes and its outcomes; the emergence and role of authoritarian great powers; and the diffusion of authoritarian politics and practice across borders. The course’s topic can be seen as situated at the intersection of International Relations and Comparative Politics, integrating insights from both worlds. Students will acquire sound knowledge of salient theories of the international politics of authoritarian rule, and engage in critical discussion and evaluation of the various approaches. |
