MA-Seminar (nach persönlicher Meldung auch für BA offen)

Erste Sitzung: 11.4.2019

*** Anmerkung / Please note: ***

The languages of this seminar are German and English, with an emphasis on the latter as a way to practice and improve archaeological discussion in English. However, anyone wishing to contribute with written work and discussion in German is very welcome. Readings will by necessity usually be in English. This seminar is a safe space with a strict policy of respect toward the linguistic competencies of all participants.

Issues of gender and sexuality have recently become highly visible in the western world. This can be seen in the increased media reporting of sexual harassment cases, debates over gay marriage, and reforms in language standards to be gender-inclusive, just to name a few. But however modern the frames may be – sexualized Snapchat posts, or the asterisk before gendered endings – the underlying issues are far from new. In the ancient world they were every bit as central, even if they were often defined and addressed in very different ways. How do ideas about gender, sex (both biological sociological aspects), and sexuality (including eroticism) differ between antiquity and the present day? How are they the same? How are these tied to power structures? How can we investigate all this through archaeological remains?

This seminar takes the form of a collaborative workshop. This means:

·      The structure is based not solely on student presentations but a variety of activities.

·      The topics and literature are not predetermined but will be created by all participants together.

·      Active participation is a necessity: in every session, every person will contribute. Passive engagement does not exist.

·      Grades therefore will be determined not by a single assignment but by all these various endeavors.

In the interest of a safe, constructive classroom environment, we are all responsible for maintaining a respectful and open-minded discourse. Part of the interest in these topics is that they are fundamental. Yet our task is to deconstruct our own biases as well as those of the ancients. “Normal” does not exist. Experiences differ. We will remain mindful of each other, of our ancient subjects, and of ourselves. Together we will arrive at new understandings of all three.

Questions are always welcome during office hours (Tuesday 3-5pm; check institute website for updates).
