Media shape communication, culture, and politics in profound ways. For a region like South Asia the transition into the digital era presents multiple promises and challenges which all reflect on social developments. Rapid digitalization and so called ‘mobile phone revolution’ have opened up new possibilities for hitherto marginalised groups (women, sexual minorities, etc.) but at the same time are cleverly instrumentalised in professional political campaigns or to support hegemonic and right-wing religious projects. New media are not only an interesting perspective to study contemporary socio-political themes but can be used as a methodological tool as well. We will discuss how new media shape politics, working environments, relationships and family life, and many more aspects. Simultaneously we will study how to use the vast pool of digital data as a research source. |
