This seminar will examine the dynamics of mediated political communication by offering a sampling of perspectives on media in relation to institutionalized hierarchies of political and cultural authority. As the study of media, politics, and culture are large and sprawling in their ambitions, the study of mediated politics contains a great deal within its bounds. Accordingly, I refer to sampling rather than an overview of perspectives. This means balancing classical texts and topics with contemporary ones, theoretical readings with empirical ones, and explicitly sociological pieces with ones drawn from political science, feminist studies, and digital/social media research. Students will be expected to actively engage with one another in exploring key questions regarding what elements of politics and policy are being altered by newer digital communication and information technologies, what elements are left unchanged, and what role(s) citizens and governments can play in the process. The course will be conducted in English.
