The discussion in our seminar will focus on the historical role played by the Muslim populations of the Indian Ocean with particular emphasis on those of the East African Coast (Waswahili). This African People of Islamic and Maritime Culture have long been neglected in the studies on the Indian Ocean. The impact of the other Muslims of India, Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Indonesia on the commercial activities of the Indian Ocean, before and after the arrival of Europeans, will also be an important point of our discussions. The Dhow and the monsoons, as the central means of communication and connections between the different regions of the Indian Ocean, will be the springboard and the optics of our analysis.
