Announcement: Study project
“Rural-Urban Transitions and Sustainable Land Use Management”
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Karatina University and University of Nairobi
Rural-urban transition in Kenya has been characterized by exponential urban population growth, increased agricultural productivity and infrastructural expansion at the expense of the natural resource base present in the rural environment. As Kenya's human population continues to grow, the pressure exerted on its natural resource, particularly land resources continues to increase in order to meet its demands. It has observed that the increasing demands of populations in developing countries like Kenya has forced the clearing of trees and vegetation to pave way for farmland, infrastructure development and human settlements further stretching the natural resource carrying capacity and ecosystem recovery.

Within this Q-Kolleg students jointly plan and implement an interdisciplinary research project focussing on sustainable land management in rural and urban areas of Kenya. Possible fields of research are 1. Land cover and land use changes, 2. Human-wildlife conflict management, and 3. Food supply chain systems. The project fosters learning objectives related to thematic, methodological and personal skills. A 2-week excursion to Kenya is envisaged for March 2018, together with students from Karatina University and University of Nairobi. Partial funding of the trip will be provided by Bologna.Lab.
The project is directed at students of 3./4. Semester in the programmes M.Sc. Integrated Natural Resource Management, International Master in Rural Development, Agricultural Economics, Int. Msc. in Horticultural Sciences, Geography and others (check if your programme recognises the course). The number of participants is limited to 10-12 students. In case of high demand a waiting list may be established. Credit points: 12 ECTS (or 6+6), exam: written report and presentation
First meeting: 19 October 2017, 2 - 5 pm, Seminar Room 217 (2nd floor), Luisenstr. 53.

All information on the course and the joint project will be given at that occasion, and further meetings are scheduled depending on participants’ availability. A 3-day training in teamwork techniques (possibly 27-29 Oct.) is compulsory for participants to ensure effective group work during the project.
