Preliminary course abstract: The course aims to familiarise the students with the history and culture of various ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines, with a particular focus on indigenous peoples and Islamized ethnolinguistic groups. It will provide in-depth discussions based on ethnographic material in order to understand the diversity of peoples in the country and the transformations that these groups have undergone. The course will also tackle historical and contemporary issues that indigenous and Islamised peoples in the Philippines are confronted with, particularly those pertaining to colonisation, integration, exclusion, resource-extraction, and violence, as well as the various modes of resistance that these groups mounted. |
