This course is dedicated to forms of the novel in English from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The range of texts will provide ample opportunity to discuss different genres as well as asthetic and narratological principles (picaresque novel, novel of development, Realism, Modernism, Postmodernism) and reflect their grounding in literary and cultural history.
Part of this module will serve a propaedeutic function and help students to bring their knowledge of the basics of literary analysis and academic proficiency up to standard (if necessary).
Our reading will proceed chronologically (Defoe – Dickens – Woolf –Winterson).
