Within the region the idea of „Asia” as a concept of a shared Asian identity can be traced back to the late 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, various actors from Asia developed a variety of definitions of “Asia” and alternative projects of interregional collaboration as a response to Western colonialism and as a critique of the existing global hierarchy. In the course the students deal with selected concepts of “Asia” by protagonists of India, China, Japan and other parts of Asia and look into the history of such international meeting points of Asian intellectuals as Calcutta, Tokyo, Shanghai, Berlin, Moskau, London and other places. |
