Science and Technology Parks – Still up to date instruments for regional knowledge transfer?

Science and Technology Parks have been established throughout Europe as instruments that enable and accelerate the market entrance of innovations originating at universities. The spatial proximity between academic and economic actors in STPs supports collaboration and knowledge transfer between universities and firms, as well as creation of science-based innovations. Therefore, science and technology parks can be considered to be innovation hubs.
Both the University of Turku and Humboldt University of Berlin locate in such an innovation hub: Science Park Turku and Adlershof Berlin. Despite the general commonalities of science and technology parks, Turku and Berlin are in many ways different cities and contexts for innovation hubs. This makes it interesting to compare the Science Park Turku and Adlershof Berlin.
This course is interested in identifying and understanding how Science and Technology Parks are organized and how they create an image and brand of themselves that reaches beyond the spatial scope of the park. Furthermore, it seeks to identify and compare instruments are applied to foster knowledge transfers and innovations, e.g. coworking spaces and startup programs.

This course is supported by the Bologna Lab in form of a Q-Kolleg. That means, it is an international research oriented project that includes a funded field trip to Turku, Finland, and work in international team together with students of the University Turku. The course is limited to 10 students from the Humboldt University and additional ten students from Turku and will be conducted in English. The course aims at initiating international comparative research-based learning between Geography students in Berlin and Turku. Besides onsite meetings in Turku (20-24 November 2017) and Berlin (21 – 23 February 2018), several formats of distant cooperation are implemented, such as e-meetings and virtual class meetings.

Zudem: Teilnahme an Forschungsaufenthalt in Turku (Finnland), finanzielle Unterstützung hierfür über das Q-Kolleg), Vorberietung und Durchführung eines Study Visits im Wissenschafts- und Technologiepark Adlershof sowie eines Abschlussworkshops

Studierende mit Interesse an internationalen Forschungsprojekten. Voraussetzung: sichere Englischkenntnisse
