Today, the broader fantasy and science fiction genre is popular as ever. This MA course wants to make sense of the cultural figures of superheroes, slayers, vampires, and zombies as well as of popular culture as a traditional research field for cultural analysis. What is the relationship between media, culture, and society? How do TV series inform the way we perceive the world? In what ways are politics and history of race, class, sexuality, and gender as well as broader questions of humanity negotiated via these cultural figures? What kind of visual imagery is being produced? Do we find images or narratives of resistance and emancipatory aesthetics, and what is the genre’s possible transformative potential? This course explores symbolic orders and cultural politics, in which the fantasy genre expresses its various meanings. Students will choose from the wide range of current TV series such as „Luke Cage“, "Game of Thrones", "Supernatural", and "The Walking Dead" to investigate their medial and aesthetic practices. We will look into the staging, visual, and narrative strategies as well as the broader regimes of looking, which inform much of the way we make sense of the world around us. For this we will engage with theories of representation and mediality, which have importantly been shaped by feminist theory and cultural studies. The seminar is open to students of European Ethnology and Gender Studies.
