The course aims to provide critical analysis of the mass displacement from Syria, described as the biggest refugee 'crisis' since WW2. It will discuss the experiences of Syrian and LGBTI refugees, the changing nature of gender relations and gender identities. Through a critical analysis of the asylum policies, institutions and practices the course aims to provide an understanding of the gendered impact and outcomes of the policies and their implementation in countries of asylum (i.e. Turkey).
This course aims also to critically examine international legal and institutional framework with a gender perspective in order to investigate the specific experiences of women and LGBT asylum-seekers and the questions involved. The feminist engagement with refugee law, the shifts in international refugee law for recognition of women and LGBT's experiences, the challenges for gendering asylum decision making procedure and the formal acknowledgement of gender concerns in refugee protection will be among the issues discussed in the course.
