Taking as a starting point the iconic text of “Les Lieux de mémoire” by Pierre Nora, this course examines artistic confrontations vis-à-vis various sites of memory, places marked by traumatic history, remnants and testimonies of historical events. It is these places where societies’ consciousness of the past and their attitude towards it unveils. Oskar Hansen’s project for the international competition of Monument for Victims of Fascism at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, which was based on his idea of the “Open form”, will serve as an introduction and a bridge to contemporary artistic confrontations with places of memory in Central-Eastern Europe. |
