The Kingdom of Christ is inside the Soul
The challenge of Puritan thinking has contributed in a major way to a corpus of literature that is still relevant today. What can Puritan religious thinking offer in a world that seemed to be to many contemporaries “a carcass” and void of “life and loveliness”? What might this “kigdom of Christ” be like once it is implemented?
We will explore the manifold Puritan as well as anti-Puritan voices before, during and after the English Revolution. John Milton`s texts will be central; others, such as Ben Jonson`s, John Donne`s, Andrew Marvell`s or Thomas Traherne`s, will also be discussed. Moreover, we will study Milton`s essays in order to explore early modern essay writing and - in particular in Part II - practice how to write essays .
