"Between foreign domination and self-determination". The History of the Baltic States in the 20th Century
The Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia were newly founded after the First World War, while the state of Lithuania was re-established. Yet their independence lasted only briefly. The Second World War and the armed conflicts in the post-war period left deep marks. A long period of Soviet rule followed until the respective independence movements led to the restoration of independence in 1991. This course seeks to provide students with a basic knowledge of the history of the Baltic States in the 20th century. It also focuses on the attempt to draw a conclusion from the last 100 years of Baltic history.
