Beer in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Beer is at the center of social and economic life all over Europe today.

But what was the situation in medieval and early modern Europe? Where was beer produced, by whom, and for what purpose? Who drank beer? Was it considered a drug? These are only a few of the questions that inform this course, which approaches the history of beer from various points of view:

economic, alimentary, chemical, social, literary, cultural, political, legal, even spiritual. There will also be a hands-on component, consisting of tasting beers brewed according to historical recipes, and perhaps even an attempt at brewing our own premodern beer.
