The seminar enquires into the relation of contemporary social structure and earlier local structures of inequality. While class has become the dominant frame of social inequality in capitalist societies, precapitalist hierarchies are informed by visions and divisions of the world, which have little to do with democracy, capital, labour, meritocracy and individualism. These visions and divisions persist underneath the class order and partly determine its particular configuration. The seminar will look at several contemporary nation states empirically after a brief introduction to the relevant theoretical literature. |

The seminar focuses on the link between big money and domination. The first part of the course will consist of reading a few classical texts on the topic. The second part will turn to empirical material on some core aspects of the link. In the final part, students will present results of their own research on the topic, which will be assisted by the teacher of the course. |
