Alle Studierenden melden sich bitte bis eine Woche vor Beginn des Semesters über die entsprechenden Moodle-Seiten für die Kurse. “English is like music to me.“ – Teaching for Language Awareness and Language Learning Awareness in the foreign language classroom. The concept of Language Awareness (LA) has gained much popularity in the recent past among language educators and researchers alike. The rising interest in LA reflects a general turn towards cognitivist approaches in foreing language teaching and learning. One of the central tenets of LA is that being aware of how language works – linguisitcally, socially and culturally – is a distinguishing feature of the successful language learner. In this seminar, we shall investigate various concepts of LA and their implications for language teaching. We shall also look at recent research in the field of LA, and reflect our own beliefs about language, language teaching and learning, the impact of personal language learning experiences on classroom practise. Students will be required to study both theoretical and research literature. They will also be requested to participate actively through written course work and contributions to in-class discussions. A reader will be provided for photocopying. Participants are asked to read the following (fairly slim) book prior to the beginning of the course:Lier, Leo van (1995): Introducing Language Awareness. Harmondsworth: Penguin. A photocopyable master will be available at the library. |
