The subject of this seminar is contemporary British fiction with a potential interest to future school teachers of English at the Sek II level. The overall objective is to engage participants in a critically well-informed analysis of literary texts within their cultural, socio-political and theoretical contexts, at the same time taking into consideration their relevance for school teaching. The novels selected for this course, all recently shortlisted for the Booker Prize, deal with issues such as childhood and the experience of exile, political and terrorist violence, living in a globalized world (transcending the well-established postcolonial dichotomies), and the limits of the human in a dystopian Britain. Please note that the Übung Sprachpraxis mit Bezug zur Literaturwissenschaft is part of this module.Required reading (please obtain your own paperback copies): · Kazuo Ishiguro.
