This course will be dedicated to both literary and cultural developments that shaped the Victorian Age. Topics will include Realism, Aestheticism, questions of art and design, technological advances, the impact of modernisation and urbanisation, gender relations, the social question, political movements and the consequences of imperial expansion.Since the course requires substantial reading, it is necessary that students read as many of the set texts as possible before the beginning of the semester.The choice of additional texts for the Lektürekurs will be decided on at the beginning of the semester.Registration via e-mail: eveline.kilian@rz.hu-berlin.deMaximum number of participants: 30Requirements: regular attendance and participation in seminar discussions, oral presentation, term paper Texts: Charlotte Brontë, Shirley; Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness; Charles Dickens, Great Expectations; George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss; William Morris, News from Nowhere; Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian GrayA Reader with additional material will be made available at the beginning of the semester. |
