This course will trace the major phases of feminist thought in Britain from the Enlightenment to the present day. The study of selected writings by feminist thinkers will give us an insight into the central issues of women’s struggle (education, campaigns for access to universities, suffrage, political participation, professions for women, equal pay, etc.), which were usually bound up with questions of gender difference and women’s ‘nature’. Consequently, apart from discussing the various movements in their specific historical and political context, particular attention will also be paid to their underlying concepts of gender.A Reader with course material will be made available at the beginning of the semester. Requirements: regular attendance and participation in seminar discussions, oral presentation, term paper (MAP) |
