In this course, we shall study two of Shakespeare's so-called History Plays in some depth: Richard III and Richard II. - Participants must be in posssession of texts of both plays (strictly no translations!). Recommended editions, available as paperbacks: a) The Norton Shakespeare (one-volume edition of the complete works), b) The Arden Shakespeare, c) The Oxford Shakespeare (Oxford World's Classics series - so far only Richard III.). It is necessary to have read both plays at least once before the beginning of term, as there will be further requirements fairly soon once the seminar gets under way. Recommended introductory textbook: Sylvia Adamson et al., eds., Reading Shakespeare's Dramatic Language: A Guide. London 2001. Also useful: Simon Palfrey, Doing Shakespeare. London 2005.Please note: This seminar forms part of module 11 "English Literary and Cultural History: Texts, Periods, Theories". It is open to students in the 'old' courses of studies, but it is primarily intended for BA students and geared towards BA requirements in the second phase of study ("Vertiefungsstudium"). It is not possible to join this class after the second week. |
