The course offers an introduction to British drama at the turn of the 20th century. While late Victorian theatre was largely dominated by melodrama and the so-called ‘well-made play’, the fin de siecle generated a variety of experiments to modernize drama. Seminar discussions will focus on Oscar Wilde’s re-writing of the comedy of manners and tragedy, on G.B. Shaw’s ‘new realism’ and the problem play, and on the Irish Renaissance Movement.Particpants must be in possession of a copy of the following texts:Oscar Wilde, Salome (1894) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895);G.B. Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession (1893);W.B. Yeats, The Countess Cathleen (1899);John M. Synge, The Playboy of the Western World (1907). |
