This lecture course will take us on a journey through the history of London, from its beginnings as a Roman settlement to today’s crowded capital with a population of approximately eight million. Historical and social developments will provide the backbone of our enquiry, but our main focus will be on the textual nature of the city, on the way literary (and other) texts produce a powerful discourse about metropolitan life that shape subsequent perceptions of London, including our own.A Reader will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
