The colloquium/seminar will study the development of jazz in its social and cultural context, its various manifestations in different arts and media, and its constitutive and paradigmatic role for defining important dimensions and hybridizing cultural practices in American culture at large. The basic text will be the outstanding anthology The Jazz Cadence of American Culture, edited by Robert G. O'Meally in 1998. At the beginning of the semester a reader of texts selected for discussion will be available in the Zweigbibliothek Anglistik/Amerikanistik (Seminarordner). The basic texts to be discussed in the course will be collected in a Reader which can be bought at Copy-Haus, S-Bahn-Bogen, Georgenstrasse/corner Universitätsstrasse. The readings will be complemented by recordings and videos: Ken Burns, Jazz, 10 videocassettes. Requirements: regular attendance and oral presentation in class.
