The seminar will use ethnographic case studies to explore what 'being young and Muslim' means in contemporary Asia, Africa and elsewhere. While learning about how believing, working or socializing is associated with various secular and spiritual discourses and cultures of consumption, we will aim to locate Muslim lifeworlds within processes of globalization, neoliberal restructuring and urban modernizations. The seminar will also include a small research component as part of which students can experiment with ethnographic methods to approach Muslim youth and lifestyles in Berlin. |
