The seminar introduces the development of American and Canadian documentary film from the silent film era to the recent “new” popularity of the documentary (e.g. Michael Moore, Al Gore, “mockumentaries,” and the impact of new channels of distribution, such as YouTube), and the theory of documentary film. After general readings in the history and theory of the documentary, we will concentrate on the following topics: Ethnographic film, Direct Cinema, feminist documentary films, and topics such as ethnicity, migration and globalization in documentary films. Some of the films that we will discuss in class will be available at Mediathek (Dorotheenstr.) for individual use. There will be additional screenings (Tuesday evenings).
