It is a truth universally acknowledged in modernity that poetry may be written only in one’s native language. Yet the intense reflection on language usage that characterizes some poetry of the past few decades, and the need to defamiliarize language in order to reflect upon it, has made possible, at least in theory, the emergence of second-language poetic practice. At the same time, globalization has produced numerous non-native speakers of English of varying levels of fluency, including near-native. Will some of these second-language speakers become second-language poets? Is there a possibility for a non-national and non-native literature in the main language of globalization? This experimental creative writing seminar will work towards developing the practice and the theory of second-language writing, with particular attention paid to translation and web mining. |
