There are historical reasons to why states and their societies in Asia are mainly perceived for their religions – like the Arabic or South and Southeast Asian societies. As an expression of regional and national cultures, religion In South and Southeast Asia has undergone a process of increasing politicization, the outcome of which can be found in the postcolonial nation states. Until today nationalist politicians pick up elements from Hinduism and Islam promoting their political and personal aims. In the seminar we want to point at the persisting tension between culture, religion and politics which arose in the 19th and 20th centuries during European colonial rule. |
