Judith Butler’s work addresses numerous important issues within the context of diversity politics. It gives insight into the production of gender and sexuality norms, radical democracy, secularism and religion, universalism and difference, precariousness and vulnerability, as well as livable and grievable life in the era of the “war on terror”. This seminar seeks to deepen the understanding of Butler’s theories against the backdrop of contemporary intellectual and political debates. In addition to focusing on the works of Butler, we will discuss contributions by other thinkers (e.g. Nancy Fraser, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, Gayatri Spivak, and Sara Ahmed) who have generated, debated or displaced Butler’s theoretical work.
