During the last 20 years nearly every country in Europe has become a parliamentary democracy. This process has revitalised the debate about the conditions for democratisation and the persistence of democratic political systems, also in the well-established democratic systems of Western Europe. all the more, since at the same time also certain problems have become more visible that can be understood as a fatigue with democratic government, such as populism, xenophobia or a decreasing scale of traditional political participation. In the seminar we will approach this topic in two ways: by studying these phenomena empirically and by discussing certain theoretical concepts helping us to understand and explain them. |
